Issue Position: Accessible Higher Education

Issue Position

Our young people are our future. They need us to give them the same opportunities that older Americans once had.

Right now, that standard is deeply threatened by the high cost of colleges and universities which discourage many from attending. For those who participate in higher education, they leave the universities carrying a debt load that will hang over them for decades. This will hurt home ownership. This will hurt retirement savings. This will harm families.

We can do much better. I intend to focus on ways to make colleges more accessible and on reversing this trend that has made universities more expensive.

I will also support federal programs that will help Idaho establish early childhood education programs. I will also look for ways to help modernize our school system without forcing local taxpayers to foot the bill. In Idaho, many rural schools are suffering because of policies that have shifted the costs of schools onto local taxpayers. While this is the result of ill-conceived state level policies, I will work at the federal level looking for opportunities to make sure every Idaho student has an opportunity for a world class education.
